"...may be the finest description of what wrestling is really like..." - Mark Schultz, Olympic Gold Medalist, NCAA champion
'...good plot twists and description of high school wrestling.." - Ben Askren, NCAA Champion and Olympian
Wrestlers feel passionate about their craft. I suppose it is the same for many sports and their athletes. But wrestling is different, just ask any wrestler. People become swallowed by its appeal and the sport becomes central to the person’s identity. If you were to sit some of my friends into a psychiatrist’s chair and ask them about “who they are”, their answer may well be; father, son, husband….wrestler. The word will come up. It may be the first or it might be farther down the line in his personal description, but “wrestler” will certainly be quickly included.
The appeal of wrestling, I think, is its honesty. There is something supremely genuine about a sport that pits one against another in combat. There is nobility in those who endure the training that is required to excel. There is a courage required by those who endure, and brotherhoods shared for all that do.
Last Chances shows the paths of two wrestlers on their final attempt to win a state title. It delivers the essence of a journey so many wrestlers have travelled and so many others simply cannot understand.

For all the intensity of emotion I've shared with my friend Allen over the past 34 years, I never knew how well he could place the written word to his thoughts. Whether or not you ever understood or followed the sport of wrestling, this story evokes an emotional reaction. Anyone who has ever competed - whether in sport, academics, socially or otherwise - can relate at least in part to this story as it's so well told. I've enjoyed the sport since watching Al and the guys compete in high school, and I think I was one of a handful girls back then who tried to understand it, but I don't know that I ever really grasped how personal, and physically and emotionally demanding it is before today. Parts of this book brought me to tears, and not necessarily the expected parts like a young protagonist's loss of a parent. Of course I began reading with a heavy heart seeing it's dedicated to our late Coach Steven Bridgett (and I say "our" since Coach shared a great deal of off-the-mat wisdom, too, as I spent 3rd period study hall as his aide sophomore year, and he continued to challenge me into college). I know this work would have made Coach proud. I see the smile in his eyes just thinking about it.Product details

Quick read any wrestler or former wrestler will love?
Rarely do I find a book that I don't want to put down. Thank you Mr. Tanaka for a great ride that truly reaches the soul of the sport.
I bought this book for my son who wrestles on his High School team. I also read the book and found it very motivating.
Great book for any wrestling fan or coach if you really want to know what goes on past the mat...
Amazing must read
My husband is a "wrestling guy" and loved this book!
I almost never leave feedback about books, but this book really struck a cord with me. I never wrestled so I knew nothing about the sport until my son started wrestling in his freshman year of high school. This book does a tremendous job of vividly depicting the arduous training, personal trials, tribulations, broken hearts, and, yes, the euphoria of those victories. It is hard to walk away from this book not thinking that every wrestler who sticks with the sport is a truly special person with an indomitable character. The "letter" in this book is worth way more than the price of the book itself. Highly recommended for any high school wrestler or parent...past or present.
