Dragon steaks, ambrosia, and chimera stew. The Magic Banquet is to die for, they say, and they are right. One guest perishes each night. The street waif, Aja, just wants a few mouthfuls of the first course, but this is a party not so easily left.

Guest List
Aja, a thirteen-year-old girl who stole into the banquet before anyone could tell her she's too young.
Janny, an old woman hungry for eternal youth.
The Empress Nephrynthian. But she'll insist on you calling her Ryn.
Her guard, Fos Chandur.
Solin, graceful on his crutches and deadly with his magic.
And a dark lord.

A wickedly clever menu makes this a dinner that shouldn't be missed. There are some familiar faces that add an extra layer of enjoyment for those that have read the other Lands of Loam books, but this is ultimately Aja's story and she shines. The book is polished and well-paced, but it's the carefully crafted knicks in the veneer that make it unique: our beloved characters are heroic and beautiful, but they have their ugly moments, too, and this is even easier to see from the perspective of an outsider. Unlike some other books where an orphan is delivered from terrible circumstances by virtue of being the protagonist and bathed in sympathy and opportunities, nothing is handed to Aja, which, of course, means we get to see her fight all the harder for what she does get!

It was fun trying to figure out each course along with the characters. One thing that stood out to me is that rather than rushing toward a climax, the tension increased in measured steps along with each course, which was fitting. There was suspense, but there was also time to savor the dangerous wonders, and oh goodness, was the food wonderful! It's like walking through Willie Wonka's chocolate factory except twice as deadly and with more enjoyable company. A thoroughly enjoyable book altogether.

Magic Banquet edition by AE Marling Children eBooks Reviews

A tasty read! Unlike many YA fantasies, the heroine is no "Chosen One" blessed with strength, magic, high status, or other special powers; she must prevail through the perils of the Magic Banquet on her own wits. It's a good reminder that magic is not only pretty colors and light, but fraught with danger.
Classic magical fantasy. An assorted group of characters consume a banquet that none of them wish to leave, but which one of them might not survive. The images and imagination flow freely here and you'll want to linger - even at your peril.
What a wonderful way for a reader, young or not, to learn about exotic foods and magical creatures. A. E.Marling's writing style brings every page alive with action and adventure. I could hardly wait to learn how each morsel might transform any of the six banquet guests. The story shines with the heroine Aja's transformation from a lonely hungry street waif into something wonderful or deadly or dangerous; one magical course after another serving as cause or antidote. Who would have thought that a banquet could be so interesting and mysterious foods or creatures of legend are now vividly alive for me.
I'm a big fan of AE Marling, and this book did not disappoint. Highly imaginative and it was fun seeing the Empress again, especially through the eyes of another girl around her age.

It would help if you have read the Enchantress Hiresha books before you read this one, as a majority of the characters will be already familiar to you. I suspect people not familiar with, for example, the Lord, might be a bit confused by some of his comments.
I honestly don't understand what A.E. Marling has done to me; I have some sort of compulsion now to read all of his work. It' started back with Fox's Bride. Perhaps there's a spell on the pages?
Anyway, Magic Banquet is a another lovely, lush, luxurious, luminous, languishing piece of luminescent literature that satisfies while simultaneously leaving you wanting one....tiny.....more...bite.
It's characters are well honed, it's environs are beautifully articulated, and the story arc is glorious.
Please tell the Lord to stick around a bit longer.
Magic Banquet is an enchanting tale of a young woman and her struggle to survive a feast that's to die for. As an orphan with no home, Aja doesn't have much going for her aside from her curiosity and education before heading to the Magic Banquet. She hopes that in attending the perilous feast she'll gain something that will change her life. Instead she spends most of the night fighting to save her life and the lives of her new companions.

Sadly that's all the description I can give you without dropping any spoilers.

Between my delight at getting a chance to spend time with some of my favorite characters from the Lands of Loam and the page turning magical adventures brought about by this singular but deadly feast I found Magic Banquet to be an all around entertaining and enjoyable read.

I didn't find the story as well rounded as some of Marling's other tales, but part of that is probably due to the younger target audience for this book.

All in all, I found it to be a quick and fun read that kept me turning pages. I look forward to the next adventures set in the Lands of Loam!
I started this book while on a plane trip. It took me a little while to fully engage with it, but by the halfway mark I didn't want to put it down. In fact, I stayed up an extra half hour to finish it (at like 1AM) at my parents' house. It's a standalone novel, but there's another book in the setting that takes place after it, The Dark Lord's Wedding, and I was very tempted to buy it immediately and start reading.

Magic Banquet is a middle-grade fantasy novel. One of the reasons I picked it up was for the table of contents, which is a menu. Seriously, go look at the table of contents if you do nothing else while visiting this page. I suspected the menu might prove metaphorical, but no, the items on the menu do correspond to actual dishes served at each section of the book. The various courses of the banquet all have dangers and adventures associated with them, as the characters are transported from one locale to the next to enjoy or potentially get killed by their meal.

The mini-puzzles and adventures of each part add up beautifully to the overall arc of the book, and the different members of the cast are great fun to watch (especially the dark lord, whom one never knows quite what to make of). Definitely recommended!
